What is Biological Ageing

While many are aware of the term chronological ageing which measures our age in years, many are unfamiliar with the term Biological Age (BioAge). BioAge is the sequential or progressive change in our bodies and factors in our individual genetic and lifestyle differences. It evaluates how old our body seems or feels.

The causes of biological ageing are typically attributed to cellular damage that ultimately causes cells to undergo senescence (lack of cell division) and eventually death. This leads to a decline in biological functions and impacts our health and wellness.

How We Test Your BioAge

Biological ageing and its inevitable cellular changes occur in virtually all biological systems. However, what differs between individuals is the rate of biological ageing. Due to poor lifestyle habits, some of us may experience a faster rate of biological ageing than others. Some examples can include excessive smoking & drinking habits, high exposure to pollutants, poor diets or lack of exercise. Ageing leads to a decline in bodily functions and lower quality of life thus explaining the current emphasis on healthy ageing.

EternaDNA utilises Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) and measures a variety of biomarkers to determine your biological age - the Telomere Test, Methylation Test, Histone Test and the Intracellular NAD test.

  • BioAge Test

We first analyse your DNA through collecting your saliva. Saliva collection will only need to be done once with us.

  • Evaluate Results

Your DNA sample will undergo our BioAge Test. We then evaluate your BioAge.

  • See The Results

We will provide recommendations based on your lifestyle. Spend the next few months to change your habits and feel the difference.

  • Re-Evaluation

Enjoy a re-evaluation with us to determine if there are any improvements in BioAge.

Types of BioAge Tests

Telomeres are repetitive nucleotide sequences found at the end of chromosomes that protect and provide cellular stability. They serve a vital role in preserving the information in our genome and allow our bodies to carry out their normal functions. As we age, our cells undergo subsequent cell replication which causes telomere lengths to shorten. By measuring the length and the extent of telomere shortening, we are able to determine your biological age.

Epigenetic alterations refer to changes in gene expression which do not affect DNA sequences. There is a continuous accumulation of epigenetic changes during ageing. DNA methylation is an epigenetic change that includes the addition of a methyl group to the DNA strand for the regulation of gene expression (inactivation and silencing). As ageing is strongly correlated with DNA methylation, we can evalaute your biological age through changes in methylation.

Histones are gene regulatory proteins that coil and package DNA. Histone modifications such as acetylation are epigenetic alterations which change the conformation of DNA and affect how tightly coiled it is around the histones. Histones act as key regulators and control the expression of genes. Changes in histone modifications reflect epigenetic changes and are associated with the ageing process.

Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD) is a molecule found inside every cell and is responsible for major energy pathways that support biological processes. These pathways are responsible for energy metabolism and ageing regulation. With insufficient NAD, the hallmarks of ageing are accelerated which can be detrimental to health. NAD levels decline with age and its deficiency is a common pathological factor of health and wellness risks.
